An intermediated quilt

Facing Assemblages

A materially dense quilt inquiry using Shibori, Brown Bag quilting, Code Crafters, face-blocks, and face-bits to investigate agency through assemblage, generativity, and embodied making.

Dissertation-derived narrative

Project inquiry

Facing Assemblages is the dissertation project where material agency becomes most pronounced. The quilt does not simply illustrate AI critique; it assembles dyed cloth, software systems, generative procedures, and embodied judgment into an evolving research artifact.

The project translates synthetic imagery into textile processes rather than merely transcribing it. Shibori dye techniques, woodblocks, face-bits, and Brown Bag quilting transform algorithmic sources through physical resistance, misregistration, dye exhaustion, and hand decisions.

This project shows that complexity can deepen rather than diminish agency when the artist remains actively engaged in the system of tools, materials, and constraints.
